 Interactive Whiteboards in the Classroom

SMART: The Market Leader

          Report Index

Smart Board was developed and is manufactured by SMART Technologies, Inc.  It is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with offices worldwide.  Currently, there are 330,000 SMART interactive whiteboards in classrooms around the world.  The board supports 31 languages.

An interactive whiteboard is a touch-sensitive technology that connects to your computer and a projector.  The projector displays your computer desktop onto the surface of the interactive whiteboard.  Using your fingers as a mouse, you touch the screen to open and control computer applications.

If choosing an interactive whiteboard from SMART Technologies, there are several options, and accessories to choose from.  The two major decisions will be on the type of interactive whiteboard and the type of projector to select.

Front Projection Interactive Whiteboards – relatively economic and flexible.  Works with a separate projector which can be mounted on ceiling, table top, wall or media cart.

Rear Projection Interactive Whiteboards – a set of mirrors enables a projector to cast an image onto the screen from inside the interactive whiteboard.  The result is a precise, shadow-free image.  Equipped with a dedicated projector and no trailing cables.

Mounting Projectors – What type you decide to purchase is a critical choice.  Keep in mind that table mounted may be knocked into frequently, resulting in the need to re-orient the board.  Choosing between wall and ceiling mounts will greatly depend on the physical structure of the classroom.

Smart 600i - The SMART Board 600i interactive whiteboard system combines a SMART Board interactive whiteboard and a wall-mounted Unifi projector with a built-in sound system.

Average cost of a complete 600i series: with 77" screen: $4,199, with 64" screen: $3,939.
