Understanding By Design
by
Grant P.
Wiggins,
Jay McTighe
For those who agree with the philosophy that the
end goal of all lessons must be thoughtfully considered,
this is a must-read. Wiggins and McTighe advocate “backward”
design for lesson plans. Rather than start from the textbook, or resource, they suggest that lesson planning
should start by first identifying the desired result, and then
working backwards from that point to formulate lesson plans.
The Revision Toolbox
by Georgia Heard
Literacy centers abound in elementary
classrooms today. Heard asserts that a missing element is the
“revision center." In this excellent book, Heard lays out a
plan for revision centers in the classroom in which students
address specifics of their work such as word, structure, voice,
sentence, and verb revision. By taking a more active role in
their writing, students can come to take direct responsibility
for the process and take pride in their progress. The book
offers practical ways to incorporate revision centers in the
classroom and provides detailed examples.

To Be An Effective Teacher (Paperback)
by
Harry K. Wong,
Rosemary T.
Wong
For first time teachers, or those looking for fresh
ideas on how to manage classrooms (particularly elementary),
The First Days of School is a great primer in classroom
management. Wong points out that students know everything they
need to know about teachers by observing teachers' attitudes and management
skills on
that first day of school.
Math on Call, A Mathematics
Handbook
by
Andrew Kaplan
(Editor),
Carol Debold
(Editor),
Susan Rogalski
(Editor),
Pat Bourdreau
(Editor)
A common complaint about textbooks is that they are poorly designed, confusing and cumbersome. Math on Call is
well designed, easy to understand and in a format that’s
portable. Math topics include numeration, number theory,
algebra, graphs/statistics, geometry and more. It shows
step-by-step procedures and explains processes in simple, clear
language. A great reference book for upper elementary through
middle school.
