Product image for ASIN: 0446674060 A is for Admission: The Insider’s Guide to Getting Into The Ivy League and Other Top Colleges,  by Michele A. Hernandez

This is truly an insider’s guide, as Michele Hernandez spent nearly five years as the assistant director of admissions at Dartmouth College.  Hernandez pulls no punches as she launches into full explanations on many topics, from the psyche of admissions officers to the Academic Index many Ivies use for admissions' calculations.

Product image for ASIN: 1594630313  What Colleges Don’t Tell You (and Other Parents Don’t Want You to Know)

By Elizabeth Wissner-Gross

A book targeted at teaching parents how to be good advocates for their children during the years leading up to college applications.  There is detailed advice on essay writing, preparing for interviews and making applications college specific. Unlike other books that focus heavily on strategies to improve GPA and SAT/ACT scores, this book gives a perspective on the collective importance of paying attention to all the small details.

Product image for ASIN: 0761536957 Harvard Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League  to the College That is Best for You by Jay Mathews

With a title like this, what’s not to love?  This is a great book to cuddle up with after reading all the advice about getting into the Ivies.  The fact is that not everyone is suited for, or would even enjoy/learn/thrive, at an Ivy League or upper tier school.  Mathews provides the “take a deep breath” attitude that might be needed if a student and/or parents lose sight of what they really want from a college education.

Product image for ASIN: 0874477115 College Application Essay, The Revised edition by Sarah Myers McGinty

McGinty’s advice is not “how-to”.  Rather, she encourages college applicants to focus on themselves and their strengths.  She does not advocate writing essays that supply renditions of what they think colleges want to hear.  This may not be a popular approach in this competitive age, and other books will provide more examples of that "perfect" college essay.  However, for the students who are striving to tap into their own unique perspectives, McGinty provides thoughtful and effective strategies.
